Exposition: First Few Days

The largest aspects of a story's exposition include the introduction to conflict, characters, and setting. Select one of these elements from your text so far. Discuss, in depth, your understanding of the element, and how you believe it will continue to develop and transform throughout the reading.

For example: Focus on one specific character you have been introduced to. Discuss their description and character traits, as well as your opinion of the character so far. Then, share any predictions you may have for the character's future.

After posting, continue the conversation. Add detailed analysis to at least two other classmate's posts made. Continue responding until you feel the conversation has reached a point of resolution.

  1. I would like to discus Kevin and how shady he seems. At first his wife disappears for a couple seconds, he does nothing and acts as if was a normal thing. “He shrugged ‘It happened. I saw it. You vanished and you reappeared. Facts”(16) Granted he be in shock for a couple of seconds, but later he just watches the clock and waits for his wife to reappear like he knows what’s going to happen. “‘You were gone two or three minutes this time. I didn’t know what to think. You don’t know how good it is to have you back again.”(44) I don’t know about you, but if my wife disappeared right before my eyes I would at least a little panicked. But no He first shrugs it off as nothing and then I missed you while you were gone 3 min. It just seems off like he has no sense of urgency. I don’t know just seems too calm for someone with a disappearing wife.

    1. Maybe Kevin is just scared and is trying to keep calm about the whole situation. I also believe that he might just be in disbelief about the whole situation. “ Let yourself pull away from it...”That sounds like the best thing you can do, whether it was real or not. Let go of it.”This shows that he is trying to keep calm and just forget about the whole situation as if it never happened. If the situation had happened to me I would be in disbelief too.

    2. I see where your coming from but he can't stop it from happening to her because he doesn't know exactly what it is, and until they figure out an idea of whats happening and how it is, what do you want him to do/act?

  2. Dana, the protagonist, has been transporting to a different time and place to help a young boy named Rufus and she doesn't know why it is happening. “No! I know what I’m doing. I can see. I’m pulling away from it because it scares me so. But it was real.” (Butler 17) This shows internal conflict; she is scared of transporting again and that she doesn’t know what is going on. I believe the conflict will continue to grow throughout the story as she keeps transporting to help Rufus. I predict that Dana will question who she is by meeting her ancestors and be scared that the transporting will never end. External conflict will also grow, because whenever she transports her life is threatened, and I’m predicting conflict will grow between Dana and Rufus.

    1. I agree with you that she doesnt know what is happening when she travels back in time to help a young boy named Rufus, because she seems scared and doesnt know what is really happening, or even what the explanation is for it.

    2. I don't agree with the prediction that conflict will grow between Dana and Rufus because Rufus trusts Dana and I believe they have begun to form a special bond with each other. I predict that Rufus' father, Tom, will have a growing conflict with Dana.

    3. Your overall character analysis is very good. I like how you talked about Dana's fear or transporting and how Rufus is maybe affected by all of this. I agree with your prediction that her transporting will never end and quite honestly i think her transporting will grow. and I think that tension will rise with Dana and Rufus like you said.

  3. The main character we’ve been introduced to is Dana she just turned 26 the text says, “June 9, 1976,... It was my twenty-sixth birthday”(Butler 12), and she will get super dizzy and then travel to another time and place she doesn’t understand why though and it makes her scared, “I lowered my head and closed my eyes for a moment. I was shaking with fear, with residual terror that took all the strength out of me.”(Butler 15). I believe that as the story continues her time travel will happen more frequently but I feel that she will get more use to it happening that she won’t be as scared, but will try to figure out why this is happening to her.

    1. I agree. I think during the story she will adapt to the time travel and will figure out more in depth her purpose of the time travel. Yet I do not think her fear of the time travel will go away. I say this because during this time period in American society was very cruel to people of color. This is not a normal aspect of her life and she will be still scared that she will not return nor will know how to adapt to this time period´s atmosphere .

  4. I agree that I think she will try to figure out what is happening to her and she won't be as scared as she gets used to it. But I also think that as she keeps transporting more conflict will arise that will threaten her life making her more scared. I think this will be a battle for her to figure out what is happening and to figure out how to stop it.

  6. “June 9, 1976,... It was my twenty-sixth birthday” (Butler 12). that’s the first day she met Rufus, her Great Great Grandfather. I’m assuming when she traveled back in time is where she met him? Was it fate that Rufus and her met on her birthday? For a specific reason?

  9. The main character in the book Kindred is named Dana, who is considered to be our protagonist. It is Dana’s Twenty-sixth birthday according to the text, “June 9, 1976,... It was my twenty-sixth birthday”(Butler 12). Dana has been getting symptoms such as dizziness, “I began to feel dizzy, nauseated. The room seemed to blur and darken around me.” (Butler, 13). When this happens she transports herself into another time era. Particularly though she is transported into different years but the time period is when slavery was around. I predict tension will rise between Kevin and Dana because Kevin will begin to get aggravated because Dana can't do anything to control her time traveling. I also believe that Dana's time traveling will have a bad effect on her body and make her very weak because throughout the story her time traveling will continue more frequently.

    1. I agree that tension will rise between the two of them, but they will get through the bumpy roads together. When you say that the time traveling will have a bad effect on her body & she becomes weak, are you driving more towards possible death? Or just health issues in her body?

    2. What are you meaning by death or health issues to Dana's body. Like I understand why you are thinking that because time traveling could make her weak or have some sort effect on her, kinda like the movies, but what are you really saying?

  10. During the exposition of this book the reader is introduced to the protagonist named Edana Franklin. It is June 9th, 1976 and it is her twenty sixth birthday. This is when the first time travel event takes place when Dana is sent back to the 1800s South where slavery was very widespread. The purpose of her time travel is help save a young boy named Rufus. Alongside Dana´s character we meet her husband Kevin who was, “an unusual white man, his face young almost unlined but his hair completely gray and his eyes so pale as to be almost colorless” (Butler, 54). Kevin is a very important character to Dana as shown in throughout the text. He is kind, thoughtful, and very protective of Dana. The author uses Kevins character to demonstrate the progress in American society and how society norms have changed. Kevin is warped into time with Dana on one or her travels. During this time period, ¨ niggers can't marry white people,” as Rufus explains (Butler, 60). This creates conflict in the scene to come and demonstrates a distinct difference in time periods. I believe that if Kevin keeps appearing in the time travels it will help Dana survive being deemed as his slave. I also feel that Kevin will grow with Dana and become a dynamic character. Do you guys agree that Kevin will appear more in the story and have a greater impact in the text? Why or why not?

    1. I agree that Kevin will have a greater involvement in the story moving forward, but I'm not sure if he will travel back in time with Dana every time because it seemed in the prologue that he had not traveled with her.

    2. Yes, I do agree that Kevin will be more involved in the story and be there for Dana as the time passes. I believe that Kevin will be involved in the conflict that occurs and experience what Rufus's life is like together and get an understanding on how different their lives are compared to a slaves.

    3. I think that Kevin will have a much larger impact on the story going forward because I believe that both Dana and Kevin are going back to learn something. Its possible that Kevin is going back in time with Dana because he is the one that is going to get the most out of the experiences.

  11. In the beginning of the book, the main character, Dana, travels back in time to the antebellum South to save a little boy named Rufus. Dana travels to save Rufus’ live three separate times within three separate time periods during the first three chapters. On her first trip, Dana saves a five year old Rufus from drowning in the river and on her second trip, she saves him from burning down his house. This is when Rufus informs Dana of what time period it is and Dana realizes Rufus is her great grandfather. In this flashback you see more of Rufus’ personality and Dana describes him as, “One accident-prone small boy”(29). Rufus is very accident-prone, but also wants attention from his parents so he lights his drapes on fire. It is indicated that Rufus is very lonely because he lives on a large plantation and it is perceived that he has no siblings. I think the author made Rufus isolated so that he would seek friends within his father’s slaves. Rufus is friends with Alice, who is free, and Nigel, who is one of his father’s slaves. I think this relationships show how Rufus is a compassionate and willing to go against societal norms. Additionally, I think Dana’s goal is to influence Rufus’ views on society and to keep her family tree alive. I predict that Dana will be successful in both goals because technically it has already taken place in the past, this is just Dana’s present.

    1. I agree! His character is very lonely which influences him to push societal norms.I think that Kevin and Dana are parallels to Rufus and Alice relationship and the author puts this in place to show distinct differences between the two time periods. Also I believe that Dana will be successful because like you said is has already taken place. Yet my question is why if it has already taken place, what is her purpose of traveling back in time? To make sure it happens? What are your thoughts?

    2. I agree Bella that Dana could be going back to influence Rufus but I think that the reason she is going back is for her more than anybody else. For her to learn something perhaps something that she is missing in her present life/being.

  12. Dana is the protagonist in the book Kindred. She is a smart and independent twenty-six year old woman that is sent to all different times and places to save her ancestor, Rufus’s, life. She is very confused about what is going on and why she is traveling and not anyone else. I think that in Kindred, that she will continue to stay confused. When her time traveling first occurred, she starts to get scared as any other person would in this situation. “Your fear made you dizzy, and you thought you were coming home. Does fear usually make you dizzy?”(Butler 50). Throughout the story, I strongly think that she will figure out why this is happening to her and will understand and find the best out of it. The more she transports, the more that will go on and the more she will have to do. I also believe that she is going to overlook what it takes to be a slave and how their lives are different from hers.

    1. I agree Dana seems to be strong, smart and independent and i think she can handle herself in any given situation. Also think you are on a great track with what will happen later in the book and your ideas of what are currently taking place was almost exactly my thought process.

  13. Dana, the main character, she travels back in time to situations that involved Rufus or whenever he is hurt. Sometimes in my mind when I go through something or am just having a rough day I think about the past as I am “traveling back in time.” As I read I can understand why this is happening to Dana and can understand her feeling of terror, no after I “travel back in time” I don’t come back hurt or wet, but it still makes me think of how she could of felt at that time. The way she thinks leads me to my conclusion.

  14. The main conflict is that Dana keeps going back in time without control to the south in the 1800’s where slavery is very prevalent. Controlling when she returns to the 1800’s and comes back to present time causes quite a stir. “What the hell … How did you get over there?” Kevin whispered. “I don’t know.” (Butler, 14). Dana also is in a state of shock and is unable to comprehend what just happened to her. “Let yourself pull away from it… Let go of it.”(Butler, 17).
What do you think Dana is going to take away from her experiences back in time with Rufus? Will she be damaged by her trips back or will it make her a stronger person?

    1. I think that Dana will learn from the past that she is experiencing while traveling. From her going back and fourth she continues to still have shock and it effects her body... making her body weak. I think that she continues to go back in time because she wants to prove herself (maybe others as well) that she can overcome feeling that way and to make her strong as a person. From viewing the past I feel like will never forget it and that it will be a life experience for her.
